Reclaiming Housing For All
- Aya Community Land Trust (Founding Board Member) – As a board member, Latasha is leading efforts to prevent displacement and build wealth for Pierce County’s Black community through land stewardship and permanently affordable housing.
- Hilltop Action Coalition (Board Member) – As a board member, Latasha is advocating for community-driven development and anti-displacement strategies in Tacoma’s Hilltop neighborhood.
- Urban Studies – At Columbia University, Latasha extensively researched and wrote on the history of housing and infrastructure in cities. She understands the current issues, and is eager to put the solutions she has learned to work.
Restoring Block Power
- Tacoma Charter Review- In 2024, Latasha served on the Charter Review Committee where she introduced and advocated for the city’s charter to include policing oversight, inclusive election reform, a more transparent and accountable form of government, more empowered neighborhood councils, and the creation of a climate committee.
- Tacoma Coalition for Policing Accountability – Established the coalition that advocates for community-centered safety initiatives and is drafting policy recommendations that safeguard residents against AI and surveillance technology abuses.
- Racial & Social Justice Advocacy – Co-founded advocacy groups like the Race and Equity Committee at Bryant Elementary and Know Peace Collective, fostering safer, more inclusive environments.
- Community Theater Participant: Latasha is actively supporting multi-generational cultural and community-building projects that foster inclusivity, shared experiences, and teach our youth life skills through the arts.
Promoting Jobs that Protect People & Planet
- Trained in environmental sustainability- Latasha’s studies at Columbia University included researching and writing about environmental sustainability. Through this work, Latasha learned about the opportunities available in green industries and how other cities around the world are utilizing reclaimed and innovative sustainable methods to create jobs and heathier communities.
- Farm Foundations Program (Harvest Pierce County Graduate)- Equipped with agricultural training to implement sustainable farming practices, Latasha is passionate about access to job training that works to address food insecurity in urban and peri-urban areas.
- Continuing Education- Latasha benefits from taking advantage of continuing education opportunities. She has completed courses in grant writing and is currently enrolled in a Start Up Cooperative Academy. Not only is Latasha passionate about using what she learns to improve Tacoma, she is also eager to make continuing education opportunities more readily accessible to all.
- Lived Experience- Latasha has benefitted from her experiences growing up in a union household, participating in educational programs like alternative high school and running start, learning a trade at Bates Technical College, and being a working mother. She understands the importance of policy that supports students and workers in diverse ways.
